Apple iPhones come in two flavours – locked iphone and unlock iphone – and it’s important to be able to check which sort you’ve got. An unlock phone can be used on any phone network, while a locked iphone can only be used on the network the phone is locked to.
Brand new iphones (typically from the Apple Store) are unlocked by default. But an iPhone shipped from oversees usually will be locked to a particular network used in the originated country.for example a iphone 6 ship from the UK will be locked to lets say AT&T or Verizon, while an iphone shipped from Japan maybe locked by SOFTbank or other network providers depending on the network it was locked to.
how to check if an iphone is locked
there are two methods to check if your iphone is locked ;
check from settings method
The simplest method of checking if an iPhone is locked or unlocked, and the one we’ll use first, involves a quick look in the Settings app.
- Open Settings
- Tap Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options. (In older versions of iOS you will just have to tap Mobile – or Cellular, if the device is set to American English.)
- Check for an option named Mobile Data Network (or Cellular Data Network).
If you see an option for Mobile Data Network then your iPhone is most likely unlocked. This option should not appear on locked iPhones.
- switch on your iphone
- insert sim card
- Make a phone call. Check that the iPhone can connect a call using the new SIM card.
If the phone call does not connect with the new SIM card, then the iPhone is locked.
now that you know how to check if your iphone is locked you need to know what network it is locked to as its very vital factor in the unlocking process, some iphone technicians might charge you a fee to help you check what network its locked to but i will be teachng you on here for free.
step 1;click on settings
step 2;scroll down to general
step 3;select ”About”
the network your iphone is locked to will be displayed on the ”carrier” option under ”About”,sometimes you might need to translate the carrier name using google translator.you can thank me in the comment box later
note;the above settings and methods only work with iPhone that have ”network locks” not ”passcodes”
Now that you know that your phone is locked,i will now show you the different types of iPhone unlock and which one is preferable in Nigeria.
Types of iPhone unlocks.
Sim chip unlock
gevey, rsim, xsim, quicksim (ORIGINAL ooo. many fake in the market). AKA Sim chip is a Nano Sim like compressed chip serving as a sim adapter between your sim and your phone,in other words you place your sim on top of the nano chip before inserting it into your phone this chip activates your iPhone to work with any network as long as the chip is ‘active’ and inside the phone, the engineers will explain ‘active’ more better.
advantage: works on all iPhone 4S and iPhone 5,5s,6,6s,6s+,7 iOS versions(including latest iOS) and ALL basebands
- You do not need to jailbreak to use them. price is between 5-8k.
its like 20-30k cheaper than the unlocked one
disadvantage–You should not update to iOS immediately (for example if iOS 7 is released tomorrow) . you need to wait for confirmation that the sim still works. if not the chip might not work on the new iOS (it might also work, you just need to wait for confirmation). also it doesn’t work on new iPhone 4 or any iPhone 4 on baseband above 4.10
advantage– simply the best method (if you can afford it). no software,no chip, the phone IMEI will just be added to Apple unlocked imei database ( through d carrier d phone was initially locked to) and d phone remains permanently unlocked forever.
disadvantage— NOT ALL carriers support this method.
The price being charged by the supported carriers range from ( 2k to 45K). it now depends on how much u bought the locked phone.
As a Nigerian I will recommend the sim chip method because it’s cheap and usable.smiles.
Check and Know your IMEI
phones have been made in ways that each has a unique IMEI (international mobile equipment identity) number
Every phone or Mobile Broadband device has a unique 15 digit code, called an IMEI number.
You might need to find your IMEI number if you want to unlock your device to use with other networks, or for some insurance policies.
You can find your IMEI in the following ways:
by entering *#06# on your phone’s call screen. You can also find it in your phone’s settings
printed either on the back of your tablet, or underneath your phone’s battery.
You can also find it in your phone’s settings.
where to unlock iphone in Lagos Nigeria
A cousin abroad once sent me an iPhone 6s+ from Japan and when it arrived I went to pick it from the courier service company, only for me to put it on and find out I couldnt use my Nigerian sim with it,as it displayed a screen that prompted me as follows upon upon trying to activate the iPhone,”sim not supported ”
“the simcard that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware problem with the iPhone. please insert another sim card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier.please contact apple for more information.
Although there was network on the phone when I used an etisalat line but I couldn’t make calls or access the phone.
It was so frustrating,
after I discovered this I went about looking for places to unlock it but that was after I had called my cousin in japan and told him about the issue, all he said was that he used it with a network provider called “Softbank” I went to one phone engineer in my area that finally referred me to some iPhone gurus at computer village Ikeja.
I went to Ikeja the next day to unlock the phone only for me to get there and hear the price of the unlocking to be 37,000 naira, money enough to buy me a new android phone.
i didn’t believe it,after I heard that price I started to respect people using iphones hahaha.
but God so good I met a guy through one of my friend who works in Ikeja and he told me I could “chip” the phone to accept Nigerian sims without having to unlock it for 37k,that the sim chip cost between 4k to 8k at most, that was the best news I had heard that whole week,it was as if I was called out to come and play for who wants to be a millionaire lol.
after all said and done I chipped the phone and it has been working up till date.
so I will be sharing with you the requirements, contact, address, phone number of the guys that chipped it for me.
